The losses are expected to reach at least \u00a34 billion ($5.1 billion) in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cSuch losses undermine the ability of airport business to power the future prosperity of their local economies, forgoing crucial investment projects and, unfortunately, causing job losses,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said the AOA<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"rtcode\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/index.html?creatorScreenName=RT_com&amp;dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1285852421479190528&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rt.com%2Fbusiness%2F495502-uk-airports-losses-coronavirus%2F&amp;siteScreenName=RT_com&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=223fc1c4%3A1596143124634&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1285852421479190528\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the AOA\u2019s chief executive Karen Dee, those were \u201cthe worst four months in the history of commercial aviation.\u201d She said passenger numbers have begun to pick up, but airports would continue to face pressures&nbsp;<em>\u201cunimaginable six months ago.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the United Kingdom introduced a 14-day quarantine period for international arrivals last month, airlines have been warning it would decimate domestic tourism and damage exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>British Airways has already made heavy cuts to its operation at London\u2019s Gatwick Airport and reportedly warned that it could pull out of Gatwick altogether. Another struggling airline, Virgin Atlantic, announced plans to leave the airport last month. Budget airline easyJet has warned of upcoming workforce furloughs.
